Alhamdulillahi rabbil alamin. Wa al-shalatu wa al-salamu ala asyraf al-anbiya wa al-mursalin, wa ala alihi wa ashabihi ajmain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yang terhormat Wakil Presiden Republik Indonesia ke-10 dan ke-12, Bapak H. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla; guru kita dan Pimpinan Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, K.H. Hasan Abdullah Sahal; Menteri Agama periode 2014\u20132019 Bapak Lukman Hakim Saifuddin; Dirjen Pendidikan Islam Prof. Amin Suyitno; senior dan guru saya di UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Din Syamsuddin; Rektor Universitas Darussalam Gontor Prof. Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi; serta seluruh hadirin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lemhannas telah menyiapkan bahan sambutan dalam bahasa Inggris. Izinkan saya menyampaikannya dalam bahasa tersebut agar sistematika yang telah disusun tidak menjadi kacau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a great honor to be with you at the Global Islamic Holistic Education Summit 2026. I commend the organizers for bringing together an exceptional community of educators, scholars, pesantren leaders, policymakers, and global partners around a question that reaches far beyond education itself: what kind of human being do we need to build the future of our nation and civilization?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is increasingly urgent because we are entering an age of uncertainty. The world is changing at unprecedented speed. Geopolitical rivalries are intensifying. Technology, particularly artificial intelligence, is reshaping economies, societies, and the nature of work. Climate change, food and energy insecurity, cyber threats, disinformation, pandemics, and social fragmentation are no longer isolated challenges. They converge, interact, and amplify one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In such an environment, the central educational question is no longer simply how much students know. It is how well we prepare them to navigate uncertainty, complexity, and change\u2014and ultimately what kind of people they will become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For too long, education has often been measured by academic achievement: grades, degrees, qualifications, and cognitive performance. These remain important, but they are not enough. Intelligence without integrity can become a liability. Technology without ethics can deepen human problems. Knowledge without wisdom can intensify conflict rather than resolve it. Economic success without social responsibility can weaken the society that makes prosperity possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education for the future must therefore go beyond the transmission of knowledge. It must develop the whole human being: mind, character, spirit, skills, and a sense of responsibility toward society and humanity. This is the essence of holistic education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of these principles are not new to the pesantren tradition. They have been practiced for generations. Pesantren is not merely a place where students study; it is a school of life. Santri learn through lessons in the classroom and through the discipline of daily life. They learn simplicity, self-management, respect, cooperation, and responsibility. In pesantren, values are lived rather than merely taught. Character is cultivated through habit. Leadership is practiced by carrying real responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the pesantren tradition is deeply relevant to the global conversation on holistic education. Its proposition is simple: education is not only something we receive; it is something we live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If pesantren are to contribute more strongly to the future, however, we must also ask institutional questions. How do we ensure that values remain strong across generations? Pesantren has a distinctive tradition of leadership. The authority of a kiai is not built primarily upon formal office, but upon trust, wisdom, moral example, and service. This is a profound strength. Yet sustainable institutions require both strong leadership and strong systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wisdom of individual leaders must gradually become institutional knowledge, professional governance, capable management, and long-term strategy. We must not replace the soul of pesantren with modern management. We must strengthen institutions so that their values can endure. In simple terms, personal wisdom must be transformed into institutional wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second issue is leadership succession. An institution is not truly strong merely because it has a great leader. It becomes strong when it continuously produces the next generation of leaders. This is one of the pesantren tradition\u2019s great strengths. Santri are given responsibilities. They organize activities, solve problems, work in teams, and make decisions. Leadership is not only discussed; it is lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaders needed today must possess more than technical competence. They must be competent yet humble, confident yet responsible, globally competitive yet morally rooted, capable yet deeply human. This is the foundation of global leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third challenge is institutional sustainability. Sustainability does not mean preserving everything exactly as it was. It means preserving what truly matters while adapting what must change. I propose a simple principle: preserve the values and transform the methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The values of faith, discipline, integrity, service, solidarity, and humility must remain strong. Methods must continue to evolve. Pesantren must engage digital transformation, artificial intelligence, research and innovation, data and knowledge systems, and international collaboration. Yet one principle must never be forgotten: technology must remain a tool for humanity, not a substitute for humanity. The question is not whether pesantren should modernize, but how they can modernize without losing their soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor offers an important illustration. After a century of development, Gontor has shown that an educational institution can become more than a school. It can become a tradition, a leadership ecosystem, and a network of influence. Its alumni carry educational values into different professions, communities, and institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strength of an institution is measured not only by how long it survives, but also by how far its values travel. When knowledge passes from one generation to another, when leaders produce new leaders, and when alumni transform values into service, education becomes more than an institution; it becomes a movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can pesantren produce global leaders? My answer is yes, and we should expect them to do so. Being global does not mean abandoning identity. The global leader of the future must understand different cultures, navigate geopolitical complexity, use technology intelligently, and work across borders. At the same time, that leader must possess integrity, empathy, moral courage, and a sense of responsibility. Global vision and rooted values must reinforce one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a broader national dimension. Indonesia is home to the world\u2019s largest Muslim population and is one of the world\u2019s most diverse societies. Our national experience has been shaped by Pancasila, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, mutual respect, gotong royong, and the ability to live together in diversity. The pesantren tradition is deeply connected to this experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indonesia has demonstrated that Islam and modernity, Islam and democracy, and Islam and pluralism can coexist. This experience is not only part of our national identity; it is also part of Indonesia\u2019s soft power. We can share it with the world, not as a model to impose, but as an experience to exchange. We do not claim to possess every answer. We offer what we have learned and invite others to learn with us. That is the spirit of educational diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the perspective of national resilience, education has strategic significance. In the twenty-first century, resilience is no longer determined solely by military strength. It also depends on the quality of human capital, social cohesion, economic adaptability, technological capability, cultural confidence, and the integrity of leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A resilient nation begins with resilient people. Resilient people do not merely withstand shocks. They anticipate change, adapt, recover, and emerge stronger. Education is therefore not merely a social investment; it is a strategic investment in national resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This relates directly to the aspiration for Golden Indonesia 2045\u2014a nation that is economically strong and technologically advanced, but above all defined by the quality of its people. Indonesia in 2045 is being shaped by the young people we educate now. Our most strategic investment is ultimately an investment in human beings who are knowledgeable, resilient, innovative, ethical, and deeply rooted in their identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pesantren can help form a generation that is globally competitive, spiritually grounded, socially responsible, and committed to serving the nation and humanity. The strength of a nation is measured not only by what it produces, but also by the quality of the people it forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do we educate? Why do we develop leaders and build strong institutions? The answer cannot simply be victory in competition. Education must teach us how to live together. In a world of increasing polarization and fragmentation, education must become a force for dialogue, understanding, social cohesion, and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pesantren can therefore become more than educational institutions. They can be forces for peace, social cohesion, and human dignity. The Islamic values of compassion, justice, balance, brotherhood, and respect for human dignity carry a universal message. Education ultimately meets peace when it teaches people how to live with difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why I attach great importance to the GIHES Declaration. I hope it becomes more than a formal statement. It should become a moral commitment from Indonesia to the world: education must serve humanity; knowledge must serve dignity; leadership must serve peace; and civilization must be built upon mutual respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Indonesia, Islamic education, and the pesantren tradition, let us send a message to the world. Peace is not weakness; it is a civilizational choice. Peace does not require the absence of differences. It requires wisdom and courage to manage difference through dialogue, justice, mutual respect, and dignity. Every person, nation, and civilization deserves dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this summit to have a lasting impact, it cannot end when we leave the room. We need a global ecosystem connecting pesantren, universities, research institutions, governments, international organizations, philanthropists, and educational networks. We need joint research, international exchange, teacher and student mobility, collaborative publication, and leadership development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, experience must be transformed into knowledge. Practices that have developed locally should be documented, researched, evaluated, and shared. In that way local wisdom becomes global knowledge, and global knowledge creates global impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot predict exactly what the world will look like ten, twenty, or thirty years from now. The mission of education is not to predict the future perfectly. It is to prepare human beings who can face whatever future arrives. Pesantren has a powerful foundation for this mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us build pesantren that are strong in governance, leadership succession, institutional sustainability, character, and global leadership. Let education become a force for humanity, peace, and civilizational progress. Knowledge builds competence; character builds leadership; leadership builds resilience; resilience sustains peace; and peace opens the way to civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world does not merely need another generation that is clever. It needs people wise enough to understand complexity, strong enough to face uncertainty, humble enough to learn from others, courageous enough to stand for what is right, and compassionate enough to serve humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Indonesia, from the rich tradition of pesantren, and from an Islamic educational heritage that is deeply rooted yet open to the world, let us carry a message beyond our borders: from pesantren to global leadership, from education to peace, and from dignity to civilization. May GIHES 2026 become the beginning of a sustained global movement for holistic education, ethical leadership, peaceful societies, and a more dignified future for humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you.
